A Macclesfield boxer has won the title of Army Sportswoman of the Year.

Karriss Artingstall (26), who works as a gunner in the Royal Horse Artillery, won the award at the weekend.

Falibroome Academy alumni Karriss grew up in our town, and put our town on the map in Tokyo, bagging a bronze at this summer's Olympic Games.

The featherweight fighter narrowly lost to Japan's eventual gold medal winner Sena Irie.

The British Army Sport award has recognised her for her achievements, as well as making her profession and our country proud.

"It is amazing, especially being amongst all the army personnel in the room," said Karriss.

"I'm over the moon to have received this achievement. I can't put it into words right now.

"It is a quality way to finish 2021."

Artingstall will hope to go for another medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Karriss can be followed on Twitter.
