Macclesfield Library Reopens, but Continues Collection and Phone Recommendation Services

Our local libraries have reopened in line with the next stage of the government's roadmap.

This includes Cheshire East Council's Macclesfield Library, situated on Jordangate.

In total, sixteen of the council's libraries have opened their doors again following easing of lockdown restrictions.

All libraries have reopened with full Covid-safe restrictions in place.

This includes using computers, borrowing and returning books, and accessing local history resources.

Macc library is also welcome for those wishing to study in there.

Unfortunately, magazines and newspapers will only be available online and not in print.

Libraries will also not hold activities and events until restrictions on indoor activities are lifted. Virtual events held by our libraries will keep going to accommodate for this.

England GOV.UK COVID-guidelines suggest masks should be worn within libraries.

Social distancing measures will be in place, and computer use will be available by appointment.

Any books or resources taken out of the library, will be quarantined following their return, to help combat COVID-19.

While library services will now be more accessible to locals with the reopening of the council's physical buildings, Cheshire East Council understands that not all residents will be comfortable to visit their local library yet.

To remedy this, Macc libraries' order and collect service will continue. Those interested will simply need to call their local library to access this service.

Library staff can now drive a new electric vehicle, to deliver books to those who may be socially isolating, or who simply prefer to use the libraries services at home.

Paul Bayley, Cheshire East Council Director of Environment and Neighbourhood Services, said: "We know that our libraries are the lifeblood of our communities for so many people.

"It will be a slow and steady process getting everything back up to speed though and of course it may be some time until services look the way people may be more familiar with.

"While our physical buildings are reopening today, we will also be continuing to offer popular services that have become a lifeline to many people during lockdown.

"The new libraries electric vehicle will be put to good use as books are delivered to isolating and more vulnerable residents. Our mobile library will also be running again very soon."

The recently-launched Reading Friends project – where library staff are on hand to call anyone wanting a weekly chat discussing their favourite books and authors – will continue.

Anyone wishing to get involved should contact Macclesfield Library on 01625 374000.

Local librarian Rowena Gombersall said: "A broad range of people of all ages have used the Reading Friends scheme.

"We'll try to suggest them new books and new authors as well.

"We hope we can continue the Reading Friends scheme for as long as we can."
