Macclesfield: What's new for the Treacle Market this weekend?

By Alex Greensmith 30th Oct 2021

This month's Treacle Market is set to be the best yet, with more stalls, and brand new ones as well.

The monthly Macclesfield market will take place on October 31.

It will be an extra-spooky affair with many families expected to dress up in Halloween costumes.

Stalls will have a spooky flavour, such as skull and spider designs for Macclesfield textiles stall Posner and Posner.

There will also be a few hints of Christmas decorations to be purchased, but more fully-festive showing is expected for the last market of the year in December.

There were 45 enquiries for new stalls in September alone, and this figure will expect to double with Christmas on the horizon.

This led to 145 stalls across Macclesfield last month, with the Treacle Market debut for Unicorn Gateway.

But the number is set to be even higher, as the market returns to Castle Street for the first time since 2019, after £1.6 million regenerated street re-opened earlier this month.

Treacle Market co-organiser Becky Thompson said: "We're delighted to be expanding the Treacle Market once more with the return of Castle Street," said Becky.

"It will return to the original purpose of street food traders, but we'll be able to expand a bit and make use of the lovely new seating.

"The seven streetfood traders that were on St. Michael's Church last time will move back to Castle Street.

"We're so grateful for St Michael's and how accommodating they have been to us."

The lawn of the Market Place church will remain vacant, to allow it to recover.

Stalls will have free sweets at stalls for kids, usually contained inside a carved pumpkin.

There will also be a bar next to the Town Hall - next to the Treacle Stage.

The Caravan Bar is ran by Nick Pettigrew, who lives in Lyme Green.

They'll be open from 10am-3:30pm, for the duration of the market.

Non-alcohol options will also be available.

"We're dead excited to have been invited to take part in Macclesfield's world famous Treacle Market on the 31st October," Nick said.

"The Caravan will be loaded with all the fine real ales, lager and cider.

"As the Macclesfield days are getting colder we've added some winter warmers to the range including mulled wine and boozy hot chocolates."

As well as the Treacle Stage, and usual buskers, there will also be DJ'ing by Russ Hope from Macclesfield sustainable delivery company ELOV.

He'll be stationed with the eight vendors on Unicorn Gateway.

Brand New Macclesfield company Courthouse Collective will be selling three posters of iconic Macclesfield landmarks.

They unveiled their presence with an actual unicorn on social media.

Also new at Macc's artisan market will be Halloumination.

All lovers of the Cypriot cheese will have freshly fried sticks to enjoy.

You can follow the halloumi specialists online for more information.

Adventure Pants will be in the Buttermarket, the indoor space which re-opened for Treaclers in May this year.

New Chestergate deli Acacia Tree will debut as a new street food trader on Castle Street.

Other vendors have been confirmed by co-organiser Andy Thompson. He said: "Pots in Pieces and Clay at Home will also be new on Unicorn Gateway."

"Baby Nonna will be serving Venezuelan street food at the end of Unicorn Gateway. Their food is amazing.

"We also have a live acoustic singer in the Buttermarket from around midday."

Manchester musician Kirk McElhinney will also be making his debut in Treacletown.

He'll take to the stage live in the square, at 2pm. You can listen to his music here.

Masks are advised but not mandatory for Sunday's event.

However, vendors will be selling sustainable custom made masks, if you feel unsafe at any time.

The Treacle Market was co-founded in 2010 by Jane Munro. She passed on organisational duties to Andy and Becky Thompson earlier this year.
