The mayor has praised the work of local volunteers and groups who have responded to those in need amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Cllr Janet Jackson MBE said: "In this time of crisis I have been overwhelmed by the number of residents in Macclesfield who have come forward to offer their help to others in the Community. Family and friends supporting their neighbours and looking out for those who need their help."

Cllr Jackson went on to pay tribute to those working in the NHS and the care sector, as well as those 'key workers' who put themselves at risk.

She said: "Particularly I would like to thank all those individuals who, despite the risk of infection to themselves, are working tirelessly to help everyone in our town.

"The NHS and the emergency services, all the key workers and care assistants, our bus drivers and delivery drivers, the shop assistants and teachers, and the army of volunteers helping to support those in need in our Community."

"Macclesfield Town Council has also been assisting by giving grants to help groups of volunteers. I'm so impressed by the generous spirit shown by the people of Macclesfield at this difficult time."

Residents across Macclesfield will once again be showing their appreciation for 'key workers' in the NHS and beyond by giving them a round of applause from their doorsteps and windows tonight (Thursday) at 8pm.
