Emergency active travel review after Macclesfield councillor's question

Emergency active travel schemes in towns across Cheshire East will be reviewed this spring.

The schemes, which included cycle lanes and pedestrian zones, were put in place in the summer of 2020 because of Covid.

Feedback from residents will be taken into account, Cheshire East's deputy leader, Craig Browne, said.

Cllr Browne (Alderley Edge, Ind) was responding to a question at full council from Cllr Nick Mannion (Lab) who said a scheme had been in place in his Macclesfield and Ivy ward for over a year.

He wanted to know when the success, or otherwise, of the schemes would be evaluated, what the process was for determining whether a scheme should continue and how residents could contribute to the process.

Cllr Browne said all the schemes introduced in 2020 were being reviewed on a continuous basis.

"For example, we have removed a scheme on Broad Walk in Wilmslow in response to feedback from residents," he said.

Cllr Browne, who is chair of the council's highways and transport committee, said the consultation about the active travel schemes across the borough was still open.

He said 78 responses had been received about the Ivy Road scheme in Macclesfield referred to by Cllr Mannion, which includes 'modifications to a bus lay-by to improve a crossing point near the local school, plus an experimental 20-mile-an-hour zone'.

"We do expect to be making the crossing point permanent, generally supported by the consultation responses," said Cllr Browne. "And we'll continue to review the 20-mile-an-hour speed limit in line with our new speed management strategy once it has been approved at highways and transport committee.

"All of the other emergency schemes will be reviewed this spring."

He said the consultations on all the schemes is still open and 'the best place for residents to advise us of their thoughts on those are online at Cheshire East active travel'.
