Everything you need to know as Macc-Pow comic art festival returns for 10th anniversary

Macclesfield's popular comic art festival is just days away.

Macc-Pow returns for its 10th anniversary next week.

It promises to be bigger and better than ever, with venues all over Silktown getting involved in this year's festivities.

Organiser Marc Jackson said: "We're fast approaching our 10th Macc-Pow!

"We're really excited to have over 70 creators from the world of comics, here in Macclesfield.

"The 26th to 29th of June promises to be a celebration of comics and comic art unlike no other."

Thursday (June 26)

Macc-Pow gets underway at Cinemac with a freen screening of Mallrats, starting at 7.30pm

This classic indie film catapulted skateboard-turned-actor Jason Lee to stardom and is littered with comic book and pop-culture references.

It also stars Stan Lee in his greatest cinematic appearance.

Friday (June 27)

Head back to Cinemac on Friday at 4:30pm for the second free film screening, Popeye.

The legendary comic strip character was immortalised in this 1980 live-action musical starring the late Robin Williams.

Saturday (June 28)

Saturday is when the festival really gets into full swing, centered around the main comic art marketplace at Macclesfield Town Hall.

The first 100 children through the doors will receive a copy of the Bananaman anniversary issue of the Beano, along with a free banana supplied by The Organic North.

From 10am to 4pm the Town Hall will host the following workshops, panels and activities

  • 10:30-11:30 - Have a blast with Beano featuring Laura Howell
  • 11:45-12:45 - Goodies and Baddies with Mister Hope and Nick Moffat
  • 13:00-13:30 - Let's Chat with Paul Gravett and Tom Scioli
  • 13:30-14:00 Let's Chat with Paul Gravett and R.E. Burke
  • 14:15-15:15 - Have I Got Comix For You comics quiz show battle

Elsewhere, the Monocle Cafe will be transformed into a graphic novel reading room from 10am to 4pm.

Macclesfield Library will be hosting US comic book artist Michael Lark from 10.45am to 11.15am who will be doing a life drawing of Spider-Man.

Then at 11:45am, Mollie Ray will be showing how to create wonderful and whimsical giants in the children's area of the library.

Over at B&V, Ellie Dixon will be offering five-minute 'pawtraits' of your furry friends from 11am to midday.

From there you can make your way to Flour Water Salt, where festival regular Emma Reynolds will spend an hour doing five-minute portraits, from midday to 1pm.

Across the road, Pizza Express will host cartoonist ILYA from 12pm to 2pm as he draws anything you like, while you complete a challenge for him in return.

We're not done there either, Kev Sutherland will be bringing his unique sock puppet version of the Avengers to Proper sound at 7pm.

Meanwhile, Cinemac will host another screening at 4.30pm - Dear Mr Watterson.

Sunday (June 29)

The fun continues on Sunday, with Room for Comics hosting several workshops throughout the day.

Starting with a 10am masterclass from Kev Sutherland, who has drawn for everything from the Beano to Dr Who and Marvel.

Then at 12.30pm renowned artist Sonia Leong will be showcasing the art and tradition of manga illustration and storytelling in a hands-on session.

Last but not least, at 2.30pm Tom Scioli will be showing how to create a beast worthy of a battle with Godzilla himself.

Tom has drawn the Fantastic Four for Marvel, along with comics featuring Transformers v GI Joe, autobiographies on both Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and most recently, Godzilla.

There is then a final film screening, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, at Cinemac followed by a pizza party at The Depot.
