On the day Rishi Sunak said a General Election is 'not what the country wants', a candidate who could become Macclesfield's next MP has been confirmed.

Cheshire East Green Party have confirmed who will run to become Macclesfield's next parliamentarian in the next General Election, set to take place in either 2024, or no later than January 28 2025.

Cheshire East Green Party have announced Amanda Iremonger as their Parliamentary candidate for the constituency of Macclesfield, and have called for an urgent General Election.

Amanda has been a member of the Green Party since early 2022.

In addition to her work as a Green activist, she volunteers for Citizens Advice and for an addiction recovery service in Macclesfield.

Amanda is the second person to be confirmed to stand in the next General Election for Macclesfield. alongside sitting MP and Conservative David Rutley.

"In the light of the retrograde policies being proposed by the current government, the election cannot come soon enough," said Amanda.

"It is time for the UK to have a government focused on fairness and equality, addressing urgent issues across the board: cost of living, transport, housing, education, health, diversity (to name but six), and every policy needs to reflect commitment to addressing the climate emergency. The people of Macclesfield constituency deserve an MP who will deliver this, for them and for the whole country.

"I have always tried to live a life which is kind to the planet in many ways. I joined the Greens after a conversation with a friend. We were wondering what more we could do to change the course of the UK's disastrous approach to the Climate Emergency - and now here I am, hoping to demonstrate that anyone can make a difference.

"As the most recent local elections have shown, the UK realises that we need to act now to ensure a sustainable future for us all.

"In addition, from my work in Citizens Advice, I know we need to do more for those struggling with this government's hostile attitude to those in need. We in the Green Party want a fairer, more equal future for everyone and now is the time to build it."

Amanda replaces James Booth, who was previously selected to run for the Greens earlier this year, but he has since moved away from the area.

The Macclesfield parliamentary constituency constituency incorporates Macclesfield, Bollington, Prestbury and surrounding communities including Poynton, Disley, Rainow and Kettleshulme to the north and Eaton & Bosley to the south.

"I volunteer for an addiction recovery service in Macclesfield and facilitate a weekly session supporting people facing issues with drugs or alcohol," added Amanda.

"I have been involved with this thriving group for over a year, and I am delighted to see the knock on effects across the broader community. Inspired by this, I am due to start a counselling course at Macclesfield College in January.

"I am also a regular attendee at the Tao on Tuesday at King Edward Street Chapel (12.30-1.30pm and there's always a warm welcome for newcomers).

"Now that I have been selected as the Green Party candidate, I am looking forward to becoming more involved in activities locally.

The Greens came fourth out of five candidates in 2017, and fourth our of four in 2019.

"Last week, I was pleased to join the Make Polluters Pay stall, and I would encourage everyone to sign the petition to ask that the government forces oil and gas companies, and the banks that fund them, to pay for the damage they are causing.

"I am hoping to establish a regular Constituency surgery, probably on a Saturday morning, and I am in discussion with other members of the party about how best to achieve this."

Labour and the Liberal Democrats, the two other parties who stood with the Greens and the Conservatives in 2019, have not yet revealed who will be standing for them.
