A free horse ride will raise awareness for safety when riding, for both human and equestrian.

The 'Pass Wide and Slow Ride' will highlight the role of other road users, when they come across a horse rider.

Horses existed before cars, and once ruled the roads, but they still share it with cars, lorries, motorbikes and cyclists.

However, in 2023, the British Horse Society recorded 3,383 accidents on the road, with 85% reported as being caused by a vehicle driving too close or too fast.

So in a bid to get this number down to zero, people in Macclesfield are doing their bit.

Rural Macclesfield resident Nat Bailey has organised the 'Pass Wide and Slow Ride'.

"I own horses and live on a farm in Macc," she said.

"We're experiencing more and more issues with other road users and have decided to organise a 'Pass Wide And Slow Ride' to raise awareness."

The 'Pass Wide and Slow Ride' is to take place on Sunday September 15.

The ride will start at 11.30am, meeting for 11am at Higher Fence Farm, on Higher Fence Road.

"We will be asking walkers to attend and also possibly a truck with a PWAS banner on the back," added Nat.

"Thank you to the community for their support."

According to the Highway Code, drivers should pass horses slow and wide, to a maximum of ten miles per hour. The Code also recommends to 'be patient, do not sound your horn or rev your engine', and to leave at least two metres of space between motor and mammal.
