Inside Bosley Mill site ten years on from explosion which claimed four lives

By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 17th Jul 2025

Ten years have passed since the explosion at Bosley Mill which claimed the lives of four people.

Ahead of this tragic anniversary, B&R Urban Explorers visited the site which has since been left to ruin.

Robbie Parker, founder of the group who explore unusual and abandoned locations around the UK, said: "The Bosley Mill exploration was amazing but sad at the same time, knowing there was one person's remains never found."

Just after 9am on July 17, 2015, three explosions tore through the Wood Treatment Limited mill in Bosley.

A huge emergency service response was called to the scene, with crews from Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire and Derbyshire all in attendance.

The bodies of mill workers Dorothy Bailey, 62, William Barks, 51, and Derek Moore, 62, were all recovered from the wreckage.

Jason Shingler, 38, also died in the blast but his body was never found.

In 2021, George Boden, owner of the mill, was handed a suspended nine-month prison sentence and a £12,000 fine after admitting to offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Hughes, who led the police investigation, said: "The incident that day tore the heart out of the local community and resulted in a long and exhausting journey for those who lost loved ones and also those who suffered life-changing injuries."

The offices, workers' cottages and mansion neighbouring the mill have all been left vacant ever since the explosion.

Robbie said: "We walked into the old offices which had everything left behind, old paper work and much more.

"We then went on to explore the terraced houses. Everything was trashed but you could still get a feel for how the locals lived. A few of the houses had beds, TVs, and personal belongings left behind.

"The houses are falling apart from the years of decay. It's not a safe place so we don't encourage anyone to go there.

"We went from the houses over to the mansion which looked like it would have been a stunning home with a Mercedes left outside the front.

"The mansion contained many personal belongings which couldn't be saved. You got the feeling that it was just all left and no one ever returned."
