Joy Division and New order are to receive 'music's highest honour'.

The postpunk pioneers are set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Ian Curtis, who lived and died in Macclesfield was the iconic voice of Joy Division while the current New Order lineup features several members with ties to the town, including drummer Stephen Morris, keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and bass player Phil Cunningham.

Former member Peter Hook said: "I would just like to say how wonderfully pleased I am to be finally accepted into the Cleveland Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

"I've been looking forward to it for years so I am definitely going to make the most of it.

"I would like to say that this is for Ian Curtis and for all the fans of both bands, without you we would be nothing, so thank you so much."

To be eligible for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the artist/band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination.

This year's Inductees were announced by Ryan Seacrest and 2022 inductee Lionel Richie during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame episode of 'American Idol' on Monday, April 13.

The induction ceremony will be held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles in November.

John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, said: "Induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is music's highest honour.

"We look forward to celebrating these remarkable artists at this year's ceremony – it's going to be an unforgettable night."

After attending a now-legendary Sex Pistols show at Manchester's Free Trade Hall in 1976, Ian Curtis, Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and guitarist Bernard Sumner started Joy Division.

Hits include Transmission, She's Lost Control, and, of course, Love Will Tear Us Apart.

Tragically, just days before they were due to begin their 1980 U.S. tour, Curtis took his own life at his home on Barton Street in Macclesfield.

The remaining band members persevered, adding Gillian Gilbert to the lineup and forming New Order.

They would achieve mainstream success during the 1980s with cult classics such as True Faith and Blue Monday.

In the 21st century, New Order has continued to evolve musically, with the additions of Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman.
