Joy Division Artwork Reimagined To Combat Climate Change

By Alex Greensmith 21st Apr 2021

Iconic art of the Macc band Joy Division has been printed on a t-shirt to fight climate change.

The legendary post-punk band, who's members Stephen Morris and Ian Curtis hailed from Macclesfield, had artist Peter Saville design their debut album cover in 1979.

Mr Saville's iconic artwork for the Unknown Pleasures LP is based an image of radio waves from The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy.

The design has become an iconic staple of popular culture in its own right.

The 65-year-old Manchester artist has changed the waves to flat lines, symbolising the eternal silence of a dead planet wrecked by climate change.

He has replaced the band and album name with "NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET" in block capitals.

The shirt costs £21 and is sold on the Music Declares Emergency website.

Joy Division's bassist Peter Hook, who often performs in Macclesfield's Christ Church for charity, said:

"The truth of the matter is that the world is in terrible trouble now and if we don't look to address the climate emergency facing the planet immediately, then ourselves and all future generations face tremendous problems.

If everyone can look to make changes, we could all have a huge impact."

Released ahead of Earth Day, the charity Music Declares Emergency reassures fans that the tee is "Printed in the UK with low waste printing tech".

It also states that the limited edition shirt is "Made in a renewable energy powered factory audited for a wide range of social and sustainability criteria."

The charity want to gain the attention of the government to influence climate policy for the benefit of the planet.

It is not Hook's first foray into fundraising in recent months.

Last May, he livestreamed a Macclesfield gig at Bridge St's Christ Church.

Hook raised money for epilepsy causes in honour of his deceased bandmate Ian Curtis.
