Macclesfield: 95-year-old clip shows opening of Trentabank Reservoir

Did you know? 2024 marks the 95th anniversary of Trentabank Reservoir.

The 23-acre body of water was opened in 1929.

o we've contacted United Utilities to see if they are marking the occasion.

And footage has resurfaced online of the first day of operation, which featured a visit from a Royal Family member.

Stunning video by British Pathe show thousands of well-dressed Maxonians gathered around Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester.

The opening was even blessed by a member of the church.

Trentabank is one of four reservoirs which collect from the River Bollin.

It cost £210,000 to build. In today's money, that is over £11 million in today's money. (£11,022,531.72, as of October 2023)

The royal was 29 when he visited Macclesfield's Trentabank Resevoir. He was the third son and fourth child of King George V and Queen Mary. He died in 1974, aged 74. (Image - Public Domain https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Prince_Henry,_Duke_of_Gloucester.jpg)
The reservoir is located inside the 42.7-acre Trentabank Reservoir Nature Reserve.

It is thought to have the largest population of herons in the Peak District.
