Macclesfield and Bollington: Fire service apprenticeship applications close on Monday

Do you know a young person who has just finished their A-levels? Or do you know an 18 year old who wants a career?

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are after new apprentices, to help secure the emergency services' future. It will include work in Macclesfield and Bollington.

A Firefighter and Community Safety (FCS) Apprentice will teach 36 months of skills and knowledge required to become a firefighter within one of the nation's leading fire and rescue services.

For the first 15 months, succesful local applicants will be paid in line with the real Living Wage currently set at £9.50 per hour.

They will be required to work 37 hours a week and your annual apprenticeship salary (based on this rate) will be £18,328 per annum.

Upon successful completion of the first 15 months, young Maxonians will be offered a Trainee Firefighter position.

The Trainee Firefighter rate is currently £11.05 per hour, £24,191 per annum.

Upon successful completion of this, you will be placed on a specific Cheshire station as a Development Firefighter, and will be paid in line with the Development Firefighter rate, currently £11.51 per hour, £25,198 per annum.

Where hours will also increase with pay, as you will be aligned to a watch and be required to work 42 hours per week. The completion of setting up a rewarding career in saving the public.

To be eligible you will need to be aged 18 or over, as well as having passes at Maths and English GCSEs.

A firefighter selection test of physical fitness will also need to be passed, and a driving licence is desired for the abilities to travel to different sites across Cheshire.

"If you are enthusiastic, committed to learning new skills, dedicated to delivering an excellent service to the community and keen to step into a vocation like no other then an apprenticeship within Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service might be for you," said a statement.

"This is a varied apprenticeship where you will spend time learning about the work of our various departments, including Prevention and Protection as well as experiencing the operational work carried out by our firefighting crews.

"The intended outcome for all of our FCS apprentices is to secure a permanent Firefighter position with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

"One thing is for sure, once fully trained, you will able to look forward to a varied and highly rewarding career within an organisation that strives for excellence in every area of the business."

Macclesfield Fire Station is staffed by two Watches, Charlie and Delta, with seven personnel on each watch.

The Watches rotate every three days and work from 7.00am - 7.00pm.

Macclesfield also has 13 on-call/part-time fire fighters.

All Bollington firefighters have other employment - but that doesn't mean the apprenticeship will not allow opportunities in the Happy Valley.
