Macclesfield: Future of Disability Information Bureau left in limbo as Council 'deeply concerned'

The future of the Disability Information Bureau and Shopmobiility in Macclesfield remains uncertain, after yesterday's planned meeting could not go ahead as planned.
Yesterday, at 11am a crucial meeting was called on the future of the disability charity and disabled vehicle shop.
While Macclesfield Nub News could not attend the meeting, an attendee has told Macclesfield Nub News what happened.
And it appears we won't know anything for sure until next month.
"There weren't enough people to hold a vote to close," the anonymous source said.
"Now people are really questioning the leadership and how it has got to this situation."
"They knew two years ago that funding was running out.
"Macc Town Council and the CVS approached with a package to save them months ago, but didn't get a reply.
"We needed 67 people for a quorum for a vote, or a vote of no confidence, but we were 20 short. Only 47 attended. And the CEO didn't attend.
"The next meeting is planned for June 12 at 11am."
As a result, jobs remain in limbo, as do the disability community who benefit from the DIB's free support, and those who get equipment from Shopmobility.
The anonymous source also told Macclesfield Nub News, it is possible for the DIB to move into the Shopmobility building, to help save both.
The DIB is currently located on Pierce Street, whereas Shopmobiity, the service operated by the DIB on behalf of Cheshire East Council, is located on Churchill Way.
Macclesfield Nub News will also be asking political candidates for comment, ahead of the next General Election, on the DIB and how they might propose to fill the gap in disability services (or indeed help rescue it).
The Disability Information Bureau has not responded to frequent requests for comment by Macclesfield Nub News.
Meanwhile, public bodies and figures are responding to the news that a Macclesfield charity could be closing.
Macclesfield Town Councillor James Barber, who co-represents Central Ward, where both the DIB and Shopmobility are based, said: "As one of the Town Councillor's for Macclesfield Central, I am deeply concerned about the potential closure of the DIB."
"The charity is a vital institution that offers crucial support to empower those it serves to achieve their full potential. I am working actively with our Town Clerk to see what the Town Council can do and we will update further in due course".".
A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "The council is deeply concerned about the recent announcement by the Disability Information Bureau (DIB) regarding their potential closure.
"We understand the DIB has called a Special General Meeting at 11am today, to discuss their current financial situation and the possibility of closure.
"The council has been in contact with the DIB chief executive to understand the potential impact this decision would have on the individuals who rely on their vital services.
"The DIB plays a critical role in our community, providing essential information, support, and resources to people with disabilities. They also manage Shopmobility in the town centre, offering equipment rentals for those with mobility limitations.
"The council is committed to supporting individuals with disabilities in our community.
"We are currently in discussions with the DIB chief executive, Macclesfield Town Council, and Community and Voluntary Services (CVS) to explore all possible avenues to:
· Understand the DIB's financial situation.
· Identify alternative solutions to maintain services, if possible.
· Minimize the impact on residents with disabilities should the closure proceed.
"We will continue to work collaboratively to ensure continued support for this vital service and the people who rely on it."
A statement from the DIB has been shared with another media outlet, but not with Macclesfield Nub News.
On Monday, they posted on Facebook: "It has always been important to us to ensure transparency regarding the work and important services that we carry out at the DIB.
"We thank you all for your patience and understanding at this time, and we will be sure to share any relevant updates in due course.."
