A beloved tradition returns to Macclesfield later this year.

The historic 'Beating the Bounds' walk makes its comeback in September, raising money for six local charities.

It is being revived by Verity Shuttleworth in memory of her father, Richard Lea, who passed away in March this year aged 80 as a result of a brain tumour.

The walk holds personal significance for Verity, who first participated in the event when she was just six-years-old.

"Beating the Bounds was a cherished part of my childhood and a way to connect with our community," she said.

"For me personally, bringing back this local tradition will be a befitting tribute to my father and his love for Macclesfield.

"But more importantly it brings our community together and supports local charities that need our help now more than ever."

Beating the Bounds, a family-friendly event which sees participants trace the boundaries of the town, was a staple of the community calendar in the 1980s.

Taking place on Sunday (September 21), the walk will start and end at Macclesfield Town Hall, beginning at 8am.

There is the option of a 13km route around Higher Hurdsfield, Tegg's Nose and Langley or a 35km route which continues on to the west of Macclesfield, taking in Danes Moss, Henbury, Prestbury and Tytherington.

Along the way there will be checkpoints with refreshments.

It is free to enter, with donations and fundraising encouraged.

Businesses are also being invited to support the event through sponsorship packages.

All funds raised will go towards Cardiac Risk in the Young, East Cheshire Hospice, Just Drop In, Space4autism, Team Hasler MND, and West Warriors MND.

Verity added: "We are grateful for the support of local businesses and individuals who help make this event possible.

"Whether walking with family, friends, colleagues or alone, we have the power to make this event a standout date in the Macclesfield calendar once again – while uniting in support of vital charities within our community."
