Macclesfield's MP has decided who he will back to be the next Prime Minister.

David Rutley MP tweeted ahead of the ITV Conservative Leadership debate which of the five remaining candidates he will be backing to enter No. 10.

Despite Macclesfield Nub News requesting for comment last Monday, Mr Rutley was not ready to respond or publicly back a candidate.

However, as of 7:55pm on Sunday, Macclesfield's MP of 12 years has decided to vote for ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Speaking on Twitter, Mr Rutley said: "I am backing @RishiSunak as he has the experience needed and a positive plan to fight inflation, tackle cost of living pressures and strengthen the economy."

The remaining five candidates to become the next leader of the Conservatives and the United Kingdom are Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and Penny Mordaunt.

A further vote to thin the herd will happen at 8pm on Monday.

Mr Rutley will be contacted for further comment.
