MP calls on council to keep Bollington tip open

The MP for Bollington has called on Cheshire East Council to keep the local tip open as recycling centre provision is under review.

David Rutley has written to the council in "strong support" of Bollington Town Council's submissions against closing the recycling centre.

He said the tip is widely used by residents, not just of Bollington, but in the neighbouring communities of Prestbury, Adlington, Rainow and areas of Macclesfield.

The Poynton recycling centre is another in the constituency that is at risk of closure.

Mr Rutley said: "I am urging Cheshire East Council to reject proposals in its review that would lead to closing either centre, as these options would not only inconvenience many local residents who actively use these recycling centres, but also lead to longer journey times, increased air pollution, increased fly tipping and a reduction in recycling."

Local action to combat climate change would be damaged by the closures, the MP said. He argued that people would have to travel further and may dissuade them from recycling in the first place.

"These impacts do not fit with the wider aims of Cheshire East Council's own Environmental Strategy and it would appear that a full environmental impact assessment has not been made of each of the options that have been set out in the review," Mr Rutley said.

Concerns were also raised about the traffic impact of closing the recycling centre in Poynton meaning residents there would have to travel to Bollington.

Mr Rutley added: "I hope that the council will listen to these concerns, and those raised by many local residents and local councils, and keep the recycling centres open."
