An audiologist is looking to follow in his father's footsteps.

Martyn Lamb celebrated registering as a qualified hearing aid dispenser on Friday (May 30).

It is the result of 18 months of hard work as an apprentice at the award-winning Bollington Hearing Centre.

"I'm really proud of what I have achieved," he said.

"It's been a long 18 months with many highs and a few lows along the way.

"I'm very glad to come out of the otherwise and I'm really looking forward to the future in this industry.

"I have free rein now to make my own decisions and do what I need to do, which is so rewarding."

Martyn, 26, grew up in Stockport and studied game design at Sheffield Hallam University.

Upon graduating in 2019, Martyn admits he didn't really know what he wanted to do with his life.

So, he decided to go and work for his dad, who is technical director at Starkey, a hearing aid manufacturer.

He said: "It was just meant to be a job to make some money while I looked for a job in game design.

"However, I quickly realised I actually really enjoyed it, in particular being able to help people."

Martyn's dad, Paul Lamb, has worked in the industry for 40 years.

"All my life I have grown up with him doing that job, so it's something I've always thought about doing and working there made me want to do it even more," he added.

"My dad is my main motivation; I really look up to him and what he has achieved in this industry."

Martyn later joined the family-run Hearing Centres group.

His career path echoes that of the company's co-owner, Clare Snelling, who followed in her own father's footsteps, qualifying as an audiologist in 1997.

"My dad has known Clare and Rory Kewney (co-owner) for years," Martyn said.

"The audiology world is quite a tight knit community – it's great! If we need support, we are always there for each other."

In October 2023, Martyn began a hearing aid dispenser apprenticeship with Bollington Hearing Centre in partnership with De Montfort University.

He said: "It's been a really good experience.

"Rory has been my supervisor, helping me and giving me advice.

"Everyone here has been really supportive."

Congleton resident Martyn now works across the company's various sites, including one day a week at Bollington Hearing Centre.

On what the future holds, he said: "For now my focus is just getting some experience and really solidifying my role here.

"Down the line I would quite like to go a bit further in terms of university and qualifications."
