'Frustrating' roadworks are still months away from being complete.

Macclesfield MP Tim Roca has shared an update from Cheshire East Council regarding the ongoing works at Mill House Bridge on London Road.

Temporary traffic lights have been in place since May 2024, when part of the bridge collapsed.

Following delays, the repair of the bridge is now expected to be completed by November 2025, with some further improvement works to follow.

Mr Roca said: "A few weeks ago, the bridge was made safe enough for engineers to carry out full excavation and damage investigations.

"Unfortunately, the damage turned out to be far worse than expected.

"The ground beneath the bridge is weaker than first thought, and with a high water table, the original foundation design could not be used safely.

"A revised design has now been approved, and work is underway to install the new foundations over the next two weeks.

"The council now anticipate that repairs to the bridge will be completed by November 2025.

"They are hopeful this can be done without the need for temporary traffic lights in the final week, but this cannot be guaranteed."

Mr Roca added that once the bridge repairs are complete, the council will temporarily leave the site so that Cadent can carry out 'urgent safety works' on the local gas network.

These gas works are separate and have been instructed by the Health and Safety Executive.

After Cadent have finished, Cheshire East Highways will return to complete further improvement works on London Road.

This includes footway and vegetation clearance, carriageway repairs and signage improvements.

However, these works cannot be completed under the current traffic light system, meaning 'bespoke traffic management' will be required.

Mr Roca said: "I know this is frustrating for residents, but safety has to come first.

"I'll continue to share updates as soon as they're available. "
