Temperatures in Macclesfield are set to soar to nearly 30C.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat-health alert for the North West.

Coming into effect from 9am on Tuesday (August 12), there is the potential for 'significant impacts' across the health and social care services due to the high temperatures.

This includes a 'likely increase' in demand for health services along with a potential rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions.

Furthermore, internal temperatures in care settings may exceed the recommended threshold for clinical risk assessment while the heat could affect the ability of the workforce to deliver services.

Dr Paul Coleman, consultant in public health at UKHSA, said: "These kind of temperatures can result in serious health outcomes across the population – particularly in those who are vulnerable, such as the elderly or those with serious health conditions - so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

"If you have friends, family or neighbours who are vulnerable, it is important to ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.

"Check in on them if you can to make sure they know that hot weather is on the way and how to keep themselves safe."

The yellow heat-health alert ends at 6pm on Wednesday (August 13).

UKHSA advice for keeping safe in the heat

  • Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am and 3pm
  • If you are going to do a physical activity (for example exercise or walking the dog), plan to do these during times of the day when it is cooler such as the morning or evening
  • Keep your home cool by closing windows and curtains in rooms that face the sun
  • If you do go outside, cover up with suitable clothing such as an appropriate hat and sunglasses, seek shade and apply sunscreen
  • Drink plenty of fluids and limit your alcohol intake
  • Check on family, friends and neighbours who may be at higher risk of becoming unwell, and if you are at higher risk, ask them to do the same for you
  • Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and what to do if you or someone else has them
