You look wheelie great: Prestbury woman urges people to glam up to take the bins out

A Prestbury woman is asking people to don their glad rags when they take out the bins and make the driveway your catwalk all in aid of charity.

Margo Cornish spearheaded the idea after her fashion show to raise funds for Maggie's Manchester had to be cancelled as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Margo told Nub News: "What we want is for people to dress up, because no one's going anywhere, but this gives them an excuse to and have some fun. They just take their bins out and take a picture or video, then post it on our bin walk Facebook group and tag five glamourous friends to do the same."

Participants are being asked to make a donation to Maggie's Manchester, a charity beside the Christie that provides a range of support for those battling cancer.

Margo, who is a board member of the charity, said she took inspiration for the fundraising drive from the same trend that has taken off in Australia. "I hadn't seen many people do it here, so I thought why not?"

She explained: "I normally hold a huge event every two years, called 'Maggie's on the Runway'. We hold the event every couple of years at Manchester Airport where here husband Charlie is CEO.

"The catwalk is built under a decommissioned Concorde and is lit up like an airport runway and all of the models are people living with cancer. It is an afternoon filled with fashion fun and fabulous fundraising."

Margo added: "We were just planning the next one for 2020, when we went into lockdown. I can't even think of bringing all of these people together because we're talking about the most vulnerable people we have."

Margo said the glamorous bin walk campaign "married up" quite well as an alternative to the fashion show as it "brings the catwalk to your driveway".

She is keen for those taking part to tag their "glamorous" friends in a "call to action" and spread the campaign as far as possible to raise much-needed funds for a great cause.

While the charity has had to close its centre- which opened four years ago today (26th April)- due to the pandemic, staff and volunteers are continuing to provide support to people living with cancer and their families.

For anyone who plans to dust off their best garments or silliest costume for the weekly bin collection, they are asked to post the results on the Bin Walk For Maggie's Facebook group.
