A 'colossal figure' in the history of Macclesfield FC has died.

The Silkmen have announced the death of former manager, Peter Wragg.

Joining the club in 1986, Peter would lead the Moss Rose outfit to a treble-winning season in 1987 and to the FA Trophy final at Wembley in 1989.

A spokesperson for the club said: "Macclesfield FC are deeply saddened to learn that legendary former Manager Peter Wragg passed away on Christmas Day.

"A colossal figure within the history of our club and non-league football more widely, Peter joined the Silkmen in March 1986.

"Overseeing a Northern Premier League treble-winning season in 1987, Peter went on to lead his side out at Wembley two years later.

"A genius in masterminding cup upsets, Peter was an enigmatic figure who paved the way for our promotion to the Football League in 1997 under Sammy McIlroy.

"Peter leaves a vibrant legacy and will remain engrained in the hearts and minds of so many of us forevermore.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Peter's family at this incredibly sad time."

Former Macclesfield manager Brian Horton is among those to have paid tribute following the announcement of Peter's death on Friday afternoon (December 27).

He said: "So sad to see about the passing away of Peter Wragg.

"A fantastic football person and a wonderful man.

"Love and condolences to his family."

Steve Burr, who played up front for Macclesfield throughout Peter's time in the dugout, added: "What a character and manager.

"Never a dull moment under Wraggie. Treble winners. RIP."

Peter managed several other clubs in the North West area, including Leek Town, Stalybridge Celtic, and Chorley.

Meanwhile, Hyde United will be paying tribute to Peter when they welcome Macclesfield on January 1.

The club announced: "Hyde United are saddened to hear of the passing of former manager Peter Wragg who was manager of the club from 1983 to 1986.

"Our thoughts go out to his family and friends and we will pay our respects at home to Macclesfield on New Year's Day."
