Monday 12th May

SciBar is science in a bar - an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place at the Vale Inn in Bollington.
The speaker in May is Nathan Adams from Manchester University.
Three years ago the James Webb Space Telescope was successfully launched and commissioned. Since then, the study of the early Universe has undergone a revolution. The high sensitivity and resolution now available to researchers has enabled them to find evermore distant galaxies and study them in exquisite detail. In this talk, Nathan will provide a tour through the early Universe as we now see it with JWST, as well as what went well and what didn't go so well with the first data that was obtained. He will show images of some of the most distant objects humans have ever seen, describe how scientists figure out what they are made out of and explore some examples of galaxies that have astronomers scratching their heads to explain.
(The image shown is the MACS 0416 galaxy cluster imaged by JWST's PEARLS survey)
Once the presentation is over the floor is open to general questions and discussion. Any level of question is welcome. SciBar is open to anyone, you don't have to be a member and there's no charge. The talk starts promptly at 6.30pm.
