Macclesfield children have been praised for giving up their own time to create Christmas cards for those in need.

Children at St. John's Primary School Children designed and crafted festive greetings cards to give to those who are on their own this Christmas.

The initiative was the brainchild of Ivymeade Co-op Customer Team Member Joanne Hall, who also is employed at the Macclesfield primary school.

"The school is just across the road, so it was a no-brainer really," said Joanne.

The seven-to-nine-year olds made the cards in their lunch breaks.

They used scrap paper, which would have otherwise gone to waste.

St. John's schoolteacher Rebecca Johnson was proud of the youngster's efforts.

"This has come from our GIFT team," said Rebecca.

The kids were rewarded with chocolate lollies for their selflessness.

"At St. John's, we have a team of children that work together who do things that will better both the school and the community.

"From giving up their own break time to do this, they have even inspired other children to take part.

"It just goes to show how much they care for other people.

"Nobody should have to feel lonely at Christmastime."

Both St John's and Ivymeade Co-op are located on Ivy Lane.

Co-op Ivymeade Store Manager David Dundas was also full of praise for the kids.

"I have worked at this Co-op for the past six months, but this has been one of the best," said David.

"Thank you for creating these cards, we will share them with some of our customers.
