Hundreds of people gathered in Macclesfield town centre this evening (5 June) in a socially distanced show of solidarity with protestors in the US and to highlight the continuing racial injustices closer to home.

Bollington photographer, Jade Tideswell, was there with her camera and caught some incredible shots of the demonstration (see gallery above).

Demonstrators participated in 'taking the knee', which has become a symbol of the Black Lives Matter movement to protest police brutality in the US.

The death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers has sparked protests across the US and throughout the world.

Event co-organiser, Eliza Beresford, told Nub News before the demonstration that she hopes the event will spark a conversation about racial injustice on the local level.

Addressing the crowds from the steps of St Michael's Church, she said: "We need to have difficult conversations with ourselves and also self-reflect on ways where we've turned a blind eye. We need to call out our racist family members and friends to set them right and educate them and ourselves."
