We are excited to announce Macclesfield and The Bayeux: A History Tapestry coming to the Museum from #MaccTextileWeek until December 2026.

Intertwining our textile heritage, medieval history, and contemporary creative energy, Macclesfield and The Bayeux is an exhibition centering our monumental community artwork, The Macclesfield History Tapestry led by Sew Your Place artists Ailsa Holland and Becca Smith.

Alongside the voices of some of the 100 participants who stitched this work to life, you will find stories of the people, buildings, and landscape from almost 900 years of our town's history.

This display also features the Story of the Bayeux, an exhibition provided by the British Museum, including audio-visual and interactive elements.

As the holder of a piece of the Leek Bayeux replica, The Silk Museum is a unique venue in Bayeux Around Britain, the national celebration of the original tapestry's return to the UK.

Alongside the exhibition, there will be talks, stitching workshops, and also activities for children and young people, including a screening of a 60-minute live broadcast from the British Museum on 14 October, the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.

Saturday 19 September - Saturday 19 December 2026, 10.00pm - 4.00pm, drop-in, FREE, but donations are welcome.
