Macclesfield MP David Rutley has paid tribute to his Conservative colleague Sir David Amess.

The MP for Southend West was stabbed multiple times at his constituency surgery earlier today, and later died.

Macclesfield MP David Rutley paid tribute to the late 69-year-old today, who died in Leigh-on-Sea.

In a tweet posted at 7:07pm, our town's MP said: "Sir David Amess was an incredibly warm, fun and decent man and a dedicated public servant."

"He will be greatly missed as a colleague and friend. Thoughts and prayers are with his family following today's tragic news."

Macclesfield's 60-year-old MP has a surgery on West Bank Road.

Rutley has been our town's parliamentarian since 2010.

Sir David Amess had been an MP for the entirety of Rutley's tenure in the Houses of Parliament.

The late politician had been an MP since 1983.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson - the boss of the two David's - stated Amess was "man who believed passionately in this country and its future."
