A number of residents were briefly evacuated from their homes after police were called to reports of a World War Two bomb being found in Turf Lane, Macclesfield.

Police were alerted to the device at 11:55am and an Ordinance Disposal unit was sent to the scene along with officers who established a 100m cordon as a precaution.

A police spokesperson said: "The item is believed to have been an empty shell and has now been diffused."

At the scene, a resident told Macclesfield Nub News that the incident went on for about 40 minutes and they were told to leave their homes for 10 to 15 minutes.

The cordon has been lifted and all roads have now been reopened.
