A van driver has been arrested as police investigate a serious crash in Macclesfield.

Police have arrested a 24-year-old man from Shelton on suspicion of dangerous driving, drug driving and possession of a knife.

It comes after emergency services were called to reports of a crash on Coare Street, near the junction of Westminster Road, at 8.37am on Tuesday, September 8.

Upon arrival, Cheshire Police officers found that the collision involved a DPD delivery van and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 68-year-old local woman, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Salford Royal Hospital by air ambulance; her condition is currently described as 'critical'.

The van driver was arrested at the scene and remains in custody as of 4pm on Tuesday.

Enquiries in relation to the incident are ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with any information to come forward.

Inspector Andy Dennison, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a serious collision and were committed to doing all we can to establish exactly what took place.

"As part of our investigation we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any video footage.
