Macclesfield Rugby: The Heartbeat of the Blues at Priory Park
By Louis Hancock 27th Feb 2026
For generations, rugby has been at the heart of sporting life in Macclesfield, and few clubs reflect that community spirit better than Macclesfield Rugby Union Football Club. A true part of the community, it's one of the oldest rugby union sides in Cheshire and a real source of local pride.
The Club's History
Rugby was first played in the town in the late 19th century, and although the present club was formally re-established in 1927, its origins can be traced even earlier, as a founder member of local league structures.
Over the decades, Macclesfield has moved around a few grounds before settling at Priory Park in 1980, the home of the "Blues" as they're affectionately known. While you might not see them topping the rugby scores, they've climbed the English league system, spending time in National Division One, and have won several titles and honours.
MRUFC Now
Today, Macclesfield's First XV compete in National League 2 North, the fourth tier of English rugby union, where they face tough opposition week in, week out.
Aside from the first team, there's the second, third, and fourth XVs, a thriving women's squad, senior and junior colts, and a huge mini and junior section. That grassroots base keeps the club alive and buzzing and gives local youngsters a way into the game they love. How to Back the Blues
If you're thinking of supporting Macclesfield Rugby, then head over to a home match at Priory Park. There's a welcoming atmosphere for all ages, a friendly crowd, and excellent facilities. Turn up on match days, wear the club colours, and bring your friends and family for the sideline buzz.
You can also get involved off the field through membership packages, volunteering, and social events. Social media channels and the official website keep fans updated with news, fixtures, and ticket info.
Upcoming Fixtures and Events
The club's calendar is packed with matches, social events, and fundraising days, all great opportunities to meet the squad and chat with fellow fans.
The First XV have regular league matches scheduled through winter and spring, including clashes at home and away that promise competitive rugby and plenty of action for supporters.
Elsewhere, other sides within the club have fixtures too, including the Women's XV and Colts, so keep an eye on the club's fixture list to plan your visits.
Final Whistle
Whether you're a lifelong follower, new to rugby, a curious local, or just a proud Maxonion, MRUFC offers something for everyone. So get down to Priory Park, get the colours on, and back the Blues.
