Age UK have marked National Volunteers week with an appeal to new volunteers.

Age UK Cheshire East offer a support service to those with dementia and memory problems, as well as raising money for the national charity at a local level.

It has been a tough few months for the good cause. Last winter saw their Churchill Way furniture showroom close, but they are still looking for new volunteers.

Across the local area, Age UK Cheshire East supports 75 volunteers and 50 members of staff. However, with their services in such demand, they are on the lookout for new volunteers to help deliver their excellent work.

From two hours a week, there is a role for everyone who is interested, and more information can be found at: this link or by emailing: [email protected]

To help raise the profile of their appeal, Macclesfield MP David Rutley came down for a meeting with Chief Executive of Age UK Cheshire East, Lynne Elliot and staff.

Macclesfield's MP for the last 13 years was invited along to thank the volunteers for all their excellent work and dedicated commitment, as well as enjoy some cream tea.

Hosted at Shrigley Court, Church Street, Bollington, volunteers from across various communities supported by Age UK Cheshire East attended the event. A variety of cakes and scones were on offer, all provided by Cherry Blossom Bakery of Church Street in Macclesfield.

Age UK Cheshire East are prioritising getting out into the community, with services available in different locations daily.

Help includes supporting residents with their bills and benefit checks, as well as focusing on protecting older and vulnerable residents from scams through targeted awareness and aftercare remains a top priority for the charity. Partnering with the Trading Standards Team, Age UK Cheshire East provide information on how to spot a scam and assist those who have been scammed to not become a repeat victim.

Speaking after the meeting, David Rutley MP said "The work Age UK Cheshire East is doing to ensure vulnerable and older residents have access to support with their benefits, bills and scams awareness is crucial. Working directly in our local communities will allow more people to be able to access their services and receive the support they require. I hope more local residents will consider becoming volunteers to help provide these invaluable services."
