Another 'SAVE DANES MOSS' protest in Macclesfield this month

By Alex Greensmith 19th Nov 2022

A 'SAVE DANES MOSS' protest will be held on Wednesday November 23 outside Macclesfield Town Hall.

Campaigners will oppose council plans to create 950 homes and a link road on the fringes of the Danes Moss Nature Reserve in South Macclesfield.

The Market Place protest will begin at 9am, just in time for a Cheshire East Council meeting to be held at the Market Place municipal building.

The event will also celebrate the recent launch of the campaign's alternative vision for the site, which celebrates nature and biodiversity.

The site is home to some of Britain's most-threatened wildlife and campaigners estimate the peat bog could release over 220,000 cubic tonnes of carbon dioxide if the area is urbanised.

Earlier this year, Cheshire East Council leader Cllr Sam Corcoran argued that even more peat could be released if Cheshire East Council didn't own the land, as it would be out of their control.

The Cheshire East leader also suggested " the government is insisting on allowing developers to dig up peat," which could imply that the campaigners efforts may be futile.

A vote could take place within months. There is also a petition and crowdfunder for those who oppose the plans. .
