Beloved Macclesfield Chinese Takeaway to close after 38 years

A Mill Lane takeaway will shut after almost 40 years.

Wok's Cooking, which started serving our town in 1983, has unexpectedly announced their closure.

They will serve their last Chinese meals to the people of Macc this Halloween, on Sunday 31st October.

It has been owned through the same family for over four decades, and the current management staff have been there since 2003.

The landlord who owns the building has decided to sell the property, which meant that the small family business was left with no option, but to close down.

"We are absolutely devastated on behalf of all of our staff and customers for having to announce this unexpected news," said Wok's Cooking Management.

"We were left with no choice by the landlord, but to close our business down, after working very hard to build it up over 18 years.

"We are still trying to process this difficult news as a family and we can only apologise for the upset caused to our amazing community that we have built over the years.

"We wish the scenario could be very different."

The management for Wok's Cooking took to Facebook to announce the hard-hitting news to their customers. The closure of the small family business has sent shockwaves throughout the Macclesfield community, with many customers left in disbelief at the unexpected announcement.

The community quickly rallied in support of the business by leaving comments of love and support for the owners and staff of the business.

One customer stated: "What a shock! Didn't expect this! Your food is the best! Phil and I will miss you very much! We love your food. You kept us going on a Saturday night during Covid. Wishing you good luck and best wishes for your future. We will be in before you close!"

Another said: "I'm absolutely devastated I'm so sorry to hear this news we have used your takeaway and been loyal customers since 2003 and we honestly haven't found better. Chinese takeaway will never be the same again."

A coeliac added: "Gutted. Our family have enjoyed your food for years and your gluten-free service is exceptional.

"It's a real shame you're shutting. Not only was it my favourite place for a takeaway, but the staff were like family to us."

The news comes just two months after the business won a 'Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award', regarding it in the top 10% of takeaways in the world.

One canny customer even asked Wok's "Have you thought about community crowdfunding? It feels like it would be backed."

However, the owners responded with "We've considered it as an option, but we just couldn't bring ourselves to start one. Coronavirus has made it a very tough few years for everyone and we wouldn't want to ask our customers to part way with their hard-earned money, as this would weigh heavily on our hearts."

The owners are still trying to process the difficult news and have not yet confirmed any future plans for the business, or a new startup.

The highly-regarded Macclesfield business is opening until the end of this month to allow their customers some time to get their last orders in.

Call in for your final orders before their closure on Sunday 31st October for collection or via their delivery service on 01625 617462.

They offer a collection & delivery service, as well as tailoring to special diets. Find more information about Wok's Cooking on their website.
