Cancer Research UK confirm permanent closure of Macclesfield charity shop
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 20th Aug 2026
A Macclesfield charity shop has closed.
Cancer Research UK's store on Mill Street shut for good at the start of August.
It comes as the charity looks to change its retail strategy to 'maximise' the amount raised for life-saving research.
Julie Byard, director of trading at Cancer Research UK, said: "We are deeply grateful to our staff, volunteers and customers who have supported the Macclesfield shop over the years.
"Their dedication and generosity have helped fund vital cancer research and made a real difference to people affected by cancer.
"We know the news will be difficult, and we want to thank everyone for the incredible contribution they've made to our mission."
She added: "Like many high street retailers, we're facing rising costs and changing shopping habits. To continue funding life-saving research at the scale that's needed, we need to change.
"The decision to close the Macclesfield shop is part of a change to our retail chain – one that will help ensure we maximise the money we raise for life-saving cancer research. If we don't act now, many of our shops are likely to become financially unsustainable over the next five years.
"The decision is not a reflection of the outstanding work of our local teams. It's a necessary step to ensure Cancer Research UK remains resilient and focused on the future. We are working closely with everyone impacted and will support them through this change.
"While the Macclesfield shop may be closed, our commitment to beating cancer together remains stronger than ever."

Cancer Research first announced plans to reshape its retail operations in October last year.
The plan was to reduce the size of its core chain to around 320 'high-performing' high street shops over the course of two years, with 90 closures by May 2026 and 100 more by April 2027.
In addition, the charity will grow its network of out-of-town superstores, with 12 new stores set to open.
By reshaping its retail operations, Cancer Research UK expects to see an increase in financial contribution of approximately £12.4m over the next five years.
Chief executive Michelle Mitchell OBE said: "I am deeply grateful to our dedicated supporters, volunteers and staff for their role and contribution in beating cancer together.
"Without action, we predict many of our shops will become unprofitable. A smaller, high-performing retail operation will mean we will fund more life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff and volunteers.
"This news will be difficult. Our decisions have been taken after serious consideration. We're committed to supporting everyone affected by these changes, and will provide clear information and support throughout the process."
