Cheshire East has been added to the government's coronavirus watchlist due to the increasing rate of infection across the borough, it has been announced.

Council leader, Sam Corcoran, said this does not mean additional measures would be put in place "at this time".

"But we are continuing to work with Cheshire West, local MPs and government to establish what additional measures will be required to slow this increase," Cllr Corcoran said.

The development comes after additional restrictions were imposed in neighbouring Warrington and Merseyside.

Cheshire East has the lowest rate of infection in the county, at 54 cases per 100,000. In Cheshire West and Chester, that number is at 64 and in Warrington at 167 per 100,000.

Cllr Corcoran said: "These latest developments should concern us, but there are things we can each do to slow the spread of the virus.

"Remember, hands, face, space and the rule of six. Get tested if you have symptoms and comply with self-isolation requirements.

"We are working tirelessly to play our part in defeating the virus and to support those most affected, but we all must be prepared for more challenges ahead."
