'Concern' is growing among AstraZeneca staff amid reports of a merger.

The biopharmaceutical firm, which has a manufacturing site in Macclesfield, has reportedly held talks with Bristol Myers Squibb over a merger.

In response, GMB Union has called for 'urgent assurances' for workers, asking the company to provide clarity on how this could impact jobs, site closures or offshoring of production.

Steve Boden, GMB regional organiser, said: "These reports of a merger are causing great concern amongst AztraZeneca's loyal workers.

"Though no deal has been formally announced, mergers can create pressure to cut costs, so staff are understandably worrying about what this could mean for them.

"We are seeking urgent assurances from AstraZeneca that UK jobs, investment and manufacturing capacity are protected, and that workers and their representatives are kept fully informed throughout any discussions.

"The UK needs its pharmaceutical industry: not just for research but also to retain skills in manufacturing.

"We have decades of experience in producing medicines, and the skills our members have take years to build up. Those jobs and that expertise must be protected."
