Macclesfield could see their first musicians enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Macclesfield residents have just two months to vote for Joy Division and New Order to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a historic American institution which recognises the cream of the crop of guitar music.

The two bands which have housed Macclesfield residents like Ian Curtis (Joy Division) and Phil Cunningham (New Order) over the years, are amongst 13 other bands and artists eligible to be voted into the Hall of Fame for 2023.

Joy Division and New Order has contained four Macclesfield residents in their bands over the years, including Rainow's Stephen Morris (Joy Division and New Order) and Gillian Morris (New Order).

Other non-Macclesfield members of the bands have included Bernard Sumner (Joy Division and New Order), Peter Hook (Joy Division and formerly New Order), and Tom Chapman (New Order).

It is not known whether New Order - still an active band - will be enter the hall of fame as their current line-up or classic pre-21st century line-up only.

The post-punk and new wave bands are not the only British performers nominated. George Michael and Kate Bush are amongst the non-American nominees.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is based in Cleveland, Ohio and was founded 40 years ago in April 1983.
