There is major disruption at Macclesfield railway station.

Trains are unable to run between Stoke-on-Trent and Macclesfield in both directions today (July 1).

This comes following damage to the overhead electric wires in the Kidsgrove area.

As a result, all southbound services heading to Stoke-on-Trent have been cancelled or substituted with rail replacement bus services.

Several services heading to Manchester Piccadilly have also been cancelled.

A statement on National Rail's website reads: "Yesterday evening, the overhead electric wires were damaged in the Kidsgrove area.

"Partial repairs have been completed, allowing some lines to reopen from Macclesfield towards Stoke-on-Trent.

"Whilst some lines remain closed, Northern services will run between Macclesfield and Manchester Piccadilly only.

"Avanti West Coast services running from London Euston towards Manchester Piccadilly will divert via Alsager/Crewe.

"Disruption is expected until the end of the day."
