A Macclesfield man has expanded his sustainable delivery business to increase recycling in Macclesfield.
Russ Hope (43) has founded his electric bike delivery company in January 2021.
He and a small team of riders carry packages across the town centre and local area, for a small fee.
Whether you want to surprise someone with a gift, or walk into town but don't want to carry your shopping home, eLOV will do it.
Now, they have added the collection of single use plastics to the things that they will deliver.
eLOV have teaming up with TerraCycle in Macclesfield, (ran be ONE Project) to collect waste from your door to be transported to (and recycled with) Terracycle.
The most commonly collected item that eLOV will deliver to Terracycle are crisp packets. Other items you can recycle include bread bags, Pringles tubes, dental paraphernalia and chocolate wrappers.
PHOTO CAPTION: According to a Statslife, a whopping 91 percent of all plastic isn't recycled at all, with many of that percentage being designed to be only used once, however, thanks to Terracycle many single use plastic items can be recycled.
By using eLOV with their electric bikes, instead of a petrol vehicle being drove, zero carbon emissions are emitted.
The incentive behind the business is that for a small fee, himself and his company will collect your recycling for you.
"We want to be the missing piece of the puzzle for people," Russ explained
"For example, someone might go the lengths of getting a skip for their rubbish instead of having it collected by an e-cargo bike."
"The skip would come on the back of a truck, which produces CO2 emissions and would create pollution problems from issues like surface blowoff, where the top layer gets blown away from the skip."
The extra effort prevents waste from the single use plastics not going into landfill. And recycling them helps reduce their carbon footprint.
Advantageously, it is not just light litter Russ and his team can carry. The trailer can take 23-and-a-half stone of weight.
"So if someone needs to remove bulkier rubbish, we can comfortably come to their house two or three times with a trailer, which would cost around £20 a time, to collect whatever they would want to get rid of," added Russ.
"We can then take it directly to the waste management centre, making it cheaper and less disruptive,"
"Back to plastic, you can bring your TerraCycle's to a place like Scoop and Scales, but if you are driving there to do it you're almost defeating the objective of it.
"Our trailers can hold 150 kilograms, which is especially good at this time of year as many people are out gardening.
"Instead of them driving somewhere to remove their waste we can do a 'green collection' where we fill up the trailer with their garden waste and do it for them"
This method will significantly reduce the CO2 emissions and create much needed change to protection the environment.
Single use plastics have a very harsh effect the environment because they don't biodegrade, as well as being made out of oil, they can also disrupt wildlife.
They cause massive pollution issues pollution as in the UK, around five million tonnes of plastic is used every year according to government figures, while only 44% is recycled.
Plastics also cause major health issues for people. As plastics don't decompose, they break down into micropastics that contaminate our environment.
According to Friends of the Earth, we consume around 20kg micro plastics in our lifetime through water and food.
And earlier this year, Dutch researchers found plastic in human blood for the first time.
So recycling plastic helps stop the demand for more, which would worsen these problems.
.eLOV feels very strongly helping to increase the number of people who recycle.
"This isn't about taking people's jobs, it's about stopping the impact of climate change," explained Russ.
"It's about encouraging people to be more conscious about TerraCycles and what can actually be recycled"
"If we don't do something to help, we are going to be in trouble."
