Time is running out to help save a 'haven' for music lovers.

Proper Sound is urging Macclesfield residents to support their appeal against a planning decision.

Cheshire East Council refused the unique Chestergate venue's change of use application on the grounds that it would have a 'detrimental impact' on neighbours.

Proprietor Lucie Wright said: "Running a business on the high street is a huge risk, especially without proper support from the council.

"But the response from the public has been amazing – Proper Sound is clearly making an impact.

"People are travelling to visit us, which is great for the town, and we've even had some high-profile DJs reaching out to play here.

"We just want the chance to keep building on that and to continue celebrating Macclesfield's music heritage."

In April 2024, Proper Sound was given the go-ahead to extend its licensing hours to 11pm at weekends and until 9pm during the week.

However, the associated planning application for a change of use was rejected by the Cheshire East Council planning authority, which is run separately to the licensing department.

A report outlining the decision explained that such a development would have a 'detrimental impact on nearby residential apartments' due to noise and disturbance.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "The council was in discussion with the applicant during the application process and, while some issues were resolved, concerns over noise and disturbance for the occupiers of nearby residential properties could not be overcome."

The appeal was started in March and the public are invited to submit comments by April 15.

A poster in Proper Sound's window reads: "The future of the venue could depend on it.

"If you believe Proper Sound is a positive part of Macclesfield - supporting independent culture, local music, tourism, and community - you can help.

"You don't need to live nearby or have commented before. Anyone can send a short message of support.

"It only takes a few minutes to say why Proper Sound matters - and every voice genuinely helps."
