A pub with a long history has hit the market.

The British Flag on Coare Street has gone up for sale with estate agents, Sidney Phillips.

Priced at £250,000 the pub came onto the market on Thursday, January 23.

It was built in the early part of the 19th century and was previously a ginger beer brewery in the 1860s.

Wet-led, the pub has its own golf society and previously hosted pool, darts and skittles nights.

However, the listing states that more recently it has operated as a 'lifestyle business' on limited hours.

As such there is potential for a new owner to increase turnover by extending opening hours.

Alternatively, a planning application (24/3247M) has been submitted to Cheshire East Council to convert the pub into a single dwelling.

These plans have received plenty of support from neighbours.

One Pownall Street resident said: "There seems little purpose in trying to prevent the inevitable closure of this pub."

Another neighbour added: "I support the proposition that the pub no longer provides any value to the community.

"This is not anyone's fault - social habits have changed following Covid and then the cost-of-living crisis.

"Conversion to a single residential dwelling seems by far the best thing to do with the building."

However, others are less sold on the idea, raising concerns about the loss of a community asset as well employment opportunities.
