The winning candidate - who couldn't make the count due to having to wake up early for her GP job, had this statement read out by her Labour colleagues.

"I would like to thank the residents of Broken Cross and Upton for placing their trust in me", she said.

"I promise to represent all of the ward's residents, and not just those who voted for me.

"This has been an issues-based campaign. And I feel this result is a vindication of the work that has both been done in Macclesfield Town Council, and by the excellent local team of Labour councillors.

"I promise to keep working in the community, thank you Broken Cross and Upton."

There were ten rejected ballot papers. Three voted for more than one candidate, seven were unmarked or voided for uncertainty.

1603 votes were cast of the 6689 total electorate.

The turnout was 23.96%, down 12.08% from the May 2019 election in the same ward.

The poor weather, Easter holidays, and the fact it was a by-election may have caused the low turnout.

Ruth won by a margin of 131 votes.

Ruth Thompson will become the ninth current Labour Macclesfield Town Councillor.

She will serve her ward alongside Labour Cllr Chris Wilcock.
