Macclesfield artists create mural featuring 80 local pub signs
Macclesfield artists have created a stunning mural championing our local hospitality scene.
The Macclesfield Art Group have meticulously recreated 80 signs of Macclesfield pubs, and blended them together into one gorgeous, nostalgic piece of work.
Late last year, they held their annual Art Exhibition held in Macclesfield Library, with this montage featuring most of the pubs in the SK10/SK11 area being a major draw.
From The Dog and Partridge in Bollington to Ye Olde Kings Head Gurnett, Macclesfield boozers from far and wide feature!
Dave Williams, Barbara Cope, Janet Rawsthorn, and Sheila King joined forces for the piece.
Sheila spoke to Macclesfield Nub News about the project.
"This was created as a charity prize which we raffled in aid of the Silklife Foodbank," she said.
"We were delighted to raise £525 for this cause. The lucky winner was Anita Lam.
"The theme was chosen as it gave an opportunity to paint a variety of subjects – landscapes, portraits, still life, abstract, wildlife and calligraphy and the montage consisted of 80 pub signs which were painted by over 30 members of the group, and co-ordinated by Dave Williams and Janet Rawsthorn.
"The paintings were varnished, glazed and framed together in a final piece measuring 90 cm x 130 cm."
Of the local brewers, Robinsons Brewery had the most pubs featured on the collage with 16 pubs.
"We were pleased to welcome Sarita Singh from Robinson's Brewery at our Exhibition Preview Evening to view the montage," added Sheila.
"The exhibition was very successful with 200 paintings on display, over a quarter of which were sold, in addition to numerous cards and craft items.
"The exhibition generated many enquiries to join our group and indeed we currently have a waiting list.
"If anyone is interested in learning more about the group our website is www.macclesfieldartgroup.co.uk where you can view the work of some of our artists in the 'gallery'.
"To see more original paintings our next annual exhibition will take place from 18 – 26 October 2024 at the library so do make a note in your diaries and please come along.
