A new art gallery is launching in Macclesfield next week, with all pieces being donated to raise money for charity.

Art for Charity is a new gallery opening on June 1 within Barnardo's charity shop on Thornton Square, Macclesfield.

The gallery will exhibit art from artists who have donated their work, which will be available to buy, with all profits going towards the charity to help vulnerable children.

Artists include punk icon Gaye Black, also known as Gaye Advert, who played bass guitar in punk band The Adverts. Gaye trained as a graphic designer and is now an artist.

She has designed record sleeves for bands including PIL and her work has featured in books. Gaye has donated a limited edition signed print featuring legendary New York musicians The Ramones.

Painter Mark Sheeky, a professional artist who has painted more than 600 surrealist paintings, has donated an original oil portrait of actress Liza Minnelli, which would ordinarily sell for around £400.

Mark's portrait of Liza Minnelli was painted in 2005, during an intense period in the public eye from her turbulent marriage to David Gest.

He said: "This is one of my early works and there aren't many from this era. Classical artists use layers of oil paint and I used two for this so it has that translucency of colour. I was really happy to donate it. It's a striking painting with a nice looking frame so I'm hoping someone will love it."

"There's something sad and special about the painting which I've always liked."

"These have been hard times for artists, and they have been hard for charities and charity shops too, so I thought they could use a hand."

Mark has won awards including the Chester Grosvenor Open Prize. His work can also be found in the Macc Art Lounge in the Grosvenor Centre.

Artists from across the region are involved and work includes ceramics, oil paintings, watercolours, textiles, linocut and sketches.

Prices start from as little as £15.

Macc Shoppers and art lovers will be able to browse the work, which will be on display in Barnardo's Thornton Square shop, alongside a biography of the artist.

Once the artwork is sold all profits will go to the charity and the work will be replaced with a new piece.

Lin Purtill, Barnardo's Manager, said: "I love art and have an artistic background and I want to share art with more people and make it more accessible.

"By working with artists, it is a great way to raise vital funds for Barnardo's whilst giving the artists a platform to show their work, which could lead to future commissions and wider recognition."

Alongside the gallery in the shop, Manager Lin and her Sales Associate will be working with Macclesfield's Adam Partridge auctioneers to hold an art auction for Barnado's later this year.

Lin Purtill added: "It will be an opportunity for art lovers to buy something that they may not normally have the chance to and profits are helping out Barnado's."

Mark Fearn, a self-taught artist living in Kerridge and known as Wonky Bolly Art has donated several prints of his work, which have a distinct style and capture local landmarks.

Mr Fearn said: "It's a great idea and there is something to suit everyone's tastes. I'm really happy to be part of this initiative and would encourage people to come along and have a look at the gallery.

"I am going to supply more prints when the first ones sell and continue to work with Barnardo's."

At least 21 artists have currently donated to the Macclesfield charity shop.

Please note, this store should not be confused with the Barnardo's on Mill Street, Macclesfield.
