Another Macclesfield bank is closing down.

Santander's branch on Mill Street will close for good on May 12, 2026.

It is one of 44 closures announced by the Spanish-owned bank, putting 291 jobs at risk.

Providing reason for this swathe of closures, Santander stated that around 96% of transactions are now done digitally.

A spokesperson said: "In response to a continuing and sizeable shift towards customers using digital banking, we are making changes to our branches to better support our customers.

"We will continue to invest in both our branch network - comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular Work Cafés – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us."

Santander is the latest in a swathe of bricks-and-mortar bank closures in Macclesfield.

Virgin Money and RBS both closed in 2022.

Barclays on Market Place went in 2023 followed by Halifax on Chestergate in 2024.

Then, in 2025, Lloyds on Mill Street closed for good.

This prominent town centre building is currently being renovated and is expected to open as 'Saffron Mall' soon.
