A fish and chip shop in Macclesfield is marking its second birthday and hopes to continue a long family legacy in the industry.
George's at Thornton Square was established by husband-and-wife team, George and Spyroulla Psomas who have come to be part of the local community.
While this is their first venture going it alone, the pair are no strangers to fish and chip world as Spyroulla has helped out in her father's Biddulph chippy since her early teens.
She told Macclesfield Nub News: "My dad's got his shop in Biddulph and he's been there for 38 or 39 years now, and before that he was working in the fish and chip shop business with family members, so he's been doing it for nearly 50 years.
"My brothers have also got fish and chip shops, so it's kind of in our blood."
George, 42, and Spyroulla, 37, live in Congleton with their two young boys and took the step to establish their own "little empire" to pursue their "passion for food" and achieve a good balance of family life after careers in other sectors.
With the children home during lockdown, the business has allowed Spyroulla to homeschool while George looks after the shop.
She said: "George, bless him, has been in all of the time, but I used to be in a lot more before the pandemic."
Asked why they picked Macclesfield to set up shop, Spyroulla said: "We always liked it as a town and spent time socialising there. It was more of an explorative exercise where we were trying to find our opportunity and then we were really lucky because we just came across the Thornton Square location and saw the premises there."
The second year in business for the couple wasn't what anyone could have expected with the pandemic's challenges, but they say the community supported them all the way through.
"The community there is amazing. It's a true local business and despite everyone having to wear masks now, we still know a lot of their faces and names. It's been really nice and everyone has just been so fantastic and warm to us; we can't thank the community enough," Spyroulla said.
She added: "That's why we put the Facebook post up, to say thank you to all of our customers and staff because without them we wouldn't be here."
As part of their thank you to the community, George's is running a competition for a chance to win a £25 voucher. To find out more, visit their Facebook page and to check out the menu and order online, visit the website.
