If you see an England flag flying outside Macclesfield Town Hall or other Cheshire East Council buildings, here is the reason why.

The FIFA Women's World Cup is in full-swing, with England having secured a spot in the knockout stages with a convincing statement 6-1 victory over China.

And to get behind the team, Cheshire East Council have just raised the flag outside their Sandbach HQ, called Westfields.

Cheshire East Council leader Cllr Sam Corcoran and deputy leader Cllr Craig Browne said, In a joint statement: "As a council, we are proud to show our support for the Lionesses during the FIFA Women's World Cup by flying the flag of St George above our main offices on their match days.

"England's performances are just getting better and better and the whole squad are an inspiration to women and girls across the country to take up sport and pursue their dreams.

"We hope to be flying the flag and helping support England all the way to the final in Sydney on 20 August. Come on England!"

As well as the crosses of St. George, other flags that have been hoisted above council-owned buildings this year include the Cheshire East Council flag, a Rainbow flag and the Ukrainian flag.
