A young defender has signed a short-term deal to play for Macclesfield FC.

Lewis Fensome (21) will help the push for promotion The Silkmen need in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division.

The Englishman will gain a wealth of experience playing in defence alongside players such as former Premier League player Alex Bruce.

Fensome drops down two tiers in the Football Pyramid from Lancashire club Lancaster City.

Despite his age, he already has a lot of first-team action, playing almost 100 times for his former club before joining The Silkmen.

In a statement, Macclesfield FC said: "Macclesfield FC are delighted to confirm the signing of 21-year-old Lewis Fensome from Lancaster City."

"The highly rated defender arrives at the Leasing.com Stadium penning a deal that'll keep him at the club until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

"Fensome certainly bolsters Danny Whitaker's defensive options, offering immense speed and versatility to the Silkmen back line, with the young defender being able to play in the centre of defence as well as at right back.

"The new signing has already made 90 appearances in the Northern Premier League Premier Division for Lancaster City following his free transfer from Preston North End in 2018.

"He joins the Silkmen after being a part of a very impressive Lancaster defence that have only conceded two goals in their last ten outings.

"The defender is a product of championship side Preston North End, a club with great affiliation to the Fensome family, with his father, Andy Fensome, being an ex-player and the current u18s coach in their academy set up."

Lewis' dad played in the Football League against Macclesfield Town in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

This brings Macclesfield FC's squad size to 31, and makes Lewis the ninth defender.

The Silkmen are currently top of the table, but have a top of the table clash against Skelmersdale United next week.
