Bosley Tug of War Club took part at the Tug of War Association National Outdoor Tug of War Championships in Bedfordshire, competing in mens and ladies weight classes on the day.

The National Championships are held across a number weight classes for mens teams, ladies teams and mixed teams.

There were to be no medals for Bosley on this occasion, but there was still reason to celebrate, as Bosley competed in the ladies weight divisions at 500kg and 520kg for the first time.

In total, Bosley took part in six weight classes on the day - the mens 560kg, 600kg, 680kg, the mixed 580kg competition where teams comprise of 4 men and 4 ladies each, and for the first time ever.

Bosley went along to the championships with a squad of 16 men and eight ladies, and were up against some tough competition from teams all over the country on the day.

The team was competitive across all weight divisions, but with a number of new members, 11 of who were competing in a national outdoor championship for the first time.

This year's contest was as much about gaining experience for future competitions as it was winning medals. Despite the lack of medals, the Bosley Ladies team came very close to achieving one on their debut appearance, coming away with a surprise fourth place finish in the ladies 520kg competition after reaching the semi-finals.

"Whilst we didn't win any medals, we had a good day in the circumstances," said Club Spokesman Alan Knott.

"It was great to have a number of new members in the team competing this year and whilst inexperience can count against you at this level, everyone has to start somewhere and this will bring everyone on to hopefully get us closer to the medals next time"

"It was pleasing to see our new ladies team compete so well at their first outing at a national competition and hopefully this marks a big first step forward in their journey towards success".

"A few of our younger members will soon be taking part in trials for the England junior and Under 23 tug of war squads to compete at the World Championships, so hopefully they will make the grade and get into those squads and we wish them the best of luck"

"We are always looking for new members to join our club – as the sport is held in weight categories, the more members of any size that we have, the more competitions we can enter, so if anyone, male or female, is interested in joining our club, then feel free to make contact with us."

These include the following events: Nantwich Show on Wednesday July 27 starting at 6pm; Macclesfield Sheepdog Trials on Friday August 5, and Bosley Tug of War Club will also be helping to run the tug of war event at the Cheshire Game and Angling Fair on Sunday August 7, which will also pay host to the Tug of War Association Inter County Championships. They practice every Tuesday and Thursday on Bosley's Tunstall Road at 8pm.
