A Macclesfield building which has hosted events for decades is set to shut their doors.

Morton Hall Community Centre on Union Road, already faced an uncertain future, as reported in October 2021 by Macclesfield Nub News.

It was then when the committee behind the for-hire venue reached out to 'the next generation' to sit as a volunteer Chair and Trustees, to ensure the space could host events for years to come.

Macclesfield residents could hire the venue for private parties, or take part in classes such as dancing or martial arts.

But almost a year later, with no interest, the Hall has sadly announced that they will not renew their lease on their website.

"With regret, and despite our very best efforts to recruit more trustees, volunteers and appoint a new chair, the current management of the hall (all volunteers) must advise you that we are in the process of terminating our lease," they said.

"We are no longer taking any event or any new regular bookings, but will be honouring existing regular weekly bookings until mid-October in the main hall only.

"After this time our registered charity and company limited by guarantee will be closed down, and the building handed back to Cheshire East Council.

"The monthly Community Coffee Mornings held on the 1st Friday of the month have now been cancelled.

"Thank you so much to those who attended these community events over the last 7 years and all bookers, supporters and users of Morton Hall."

The building was originally built in 1939, as a social space for Hovis mill workers. It still has a functional air raid shelter, having been built during the Second World War.

Cheshire East Council have been contacted for comment, on their future plans for the Hall, which is opposite a row of residential houses.

Cheshire East Council did not provide a statement at request of Macclesfield Nub News.

They did however direct to their webpage advertising the sale of the building.
